About Xylan

Xylan is the second of three medium-sized planets orbiting Zanyck - the middle
aged, main sequence, yellow star - at a distance of roughly 84 million miles.
Xylan has two small natural satellites, Geiger and Janii, that are both thought
to be captured main-belt asteroids. Sixty percent of the planet is covered in
water, a small amount of which is locked up in the two polar ice caps. The
oceans and three major continents were once rich in animal and plant life.

After the beginning of the Industrial age (approx. AU11205), rapidly expanding
manufacturing began, exploiting the few natural minerals and metals found
mainly on the largest continent (Anistos). As the growing populations of the
larger countries of the continent began to tax the food supplies, they sought
to expand their influence into smaller neighboring countries, the smaller
outlying continents, settlements in the oceans and into orbiting space
stations.

In AU11326, the Odettian Federation, a loosely connected group of scientists
and businesspeople from several countries, launched the Sigma Space Station,
the first of what was hoped to be a series of space stations designed for
scientific study and investigation of the effects of pollution on the
atmosphere and oceans, the possible links between rapid deforestation and
expanding desertification, and the possibility of creating and preserving
alternate food sources.

In AU11587, after several years of border disputes between several countries
over one of the few remaining productive mining areas on the continent, the
planet became engulfed in a destructive war. A few scientists who had fled
to Sigma Station a year earlier declared the station a politically neutral
refuge.

It is now AU11607: the ecology of Xylan has been devastated, the oceans are
dead, and only a few military installations remain on the surface which is
being patrolled by battle mechinoids.

This account of the history of Xylan was prepared by Tregina.
